A partnership between Mountbatten Hampshire and the University of Southampton means medical students are gaining hugely valuable experience in the delivery of end-of-life care.

The third-year students have been joining Mountbatten's expert care team for a day, either at our charity's inpatient unit in Southampton's West End or accompanying our community team as they care for people in their own homes, in the city and across large parts of Hampshire.

For many of the Russell Group university's students, this is their first experience of hospice and palliative care.

The experience offers them insights and opportunities, as they meet with patients, carers and Mountbatten staff.

Already this year, around 50 students have passed through the programme, including Al Razzak and Noor Rilwaan, pictured here in our inpatient unit.

By the end of the academic year, in June, Mountbatten Hampshire will have hosted nearly 90 students.

Dr Laura Deacon, who oversees the placements for Mountbatten, said: "Students have told us how valuable this opportunity has been.

"For our part, Mountbatten's team is thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to teach and share our expertise with the next generation of doctors."
